Nikon Nikkor 43-86mm Auto-C Review

A very short demonstration of the Lens Flare and busy Bokeh of a classic Nikon lens, the 43-86mm f/3.5 Auto-C zoom lens (old version), once one of the most popular zoom lenses in the world. Shot in sub-freezing temps, so very shaky hand-held work to say the least. No color grading or effects were added - this is what the video looked like off the camera (shot in Landscape Mode, for no reason). All shot with the lens wide open at f/3.5 using a ND 0.9 filter and a CPL to keep the shutter speeds reasonable. This soft lens dampens the DSLR's crisp video while the high levels of CA and barrel distortion provide an authentic vintage feel - great for home movies. All the things that make this a much maligned photographic lens make it an appealing alternative for video with a smooth and unique look. CONS: Although its optical short-comings are numerous, I consider them a benefit. But some of its operational parameters are frustrating. 43-86mm is a useless zoom range - basically plan on using it like a short tele on a DX sensor or a "normal" on an FX. The f/3.5 min aperture is too slow for interior shooting with only practical lighting, unless you like a lot of noise. As mentioned,the lens is soft... so soft it is hard to focus through the view finder without "hunting" from back to front focus several times. Most frustrating of all though is the minimum focus distance of 1.2 meters (OUCH!). ...Not a problem for backyard shooting but for interior shots, it's a limitation. PROS: The ...

Most of the time I carry the E-10 as my primary camera and use the DC260 for point and shoot.I've seen some criticisms about the E-10s auto focus in low light. This condition exists in most digital cameras not just the E-10. The only real negative that I can complain about is the TTL view finder. It's just a little too close to the body. To protect the LCD I use a clear Palm Pilot screen overlay. This keeps grease and dirt off of the screen and provides a scratch resistant surface.On the plus side, it feels just like my Nikon N80. The overall performance of the E-10 has exceeded all of my expectations. I've had the camera for 2 months and have already taken over 600 pictures. I love this camera. If you want the most bang for the buck in a digital camera and plan on taking a lot of pictures, then this is the camera to buy. I suggest that you keep a UV filter on the lense at all times. The only other filer that you might want is a circular polarizing filter. The camera will try to color balance pictures taken with any enhancing filters so save your money. The White Balance feature on the E-10 is great. I've had some pictures where the colors seem a little flat particulary on cloudy overcast days.
